Product Details
The SpectraSymbol Flex Sensor FS-L-0055-253-ST is a linear displacement measurement device that physically bends and flexes with a motion device. It features a low-profile construction and is engineered for applications where angle displacement measurement is required.
Bend Resistance: Minimum 2 times greater than flat resistance at a 180 degree pinch bend
Power Rating: 0.5 Watts continuous, 1 Watt Peak
Life Cycle: > 1 million cycles
Temperature Range: -35C to +80C
Connectors: Solder Tabs (ST)
Features
Angle Displacement Measurement: Precisely tracks movement by changing resistance as it bends.
Low Profile and Simple Construction: Easily integrated into wearable or space-constrained designs.
High Durability: Designed for over a million flexes, making it suitable for long-term robotics and medical use.
Linear Model: Part of the "L" (Linear) model series.
Operating Principles
How it Works: The sensor uses conductive inks on one side. When the sensor is bent, the resistance increases. A 180 degree pinch bend results in a resistance value at least twice that of the flat resistance.
Circuit Integration: It is recommended to use an impedance buffer (single-sided op-amp like LM358 or LM324) to reduce errors caused by the sensor's source impedance.
Voltage Divider: It can be used in a basic voltage divider circuit where V_out = V_in x (R2 / (R2 + R2)).
Common Applications
Robotics: Joint position and finger flex detection.
Gaming: Used in virtual motion controllers and data gloves.
Medical and Therapy: Monitoring physical therapy progress and integrated into medical devices.
Computer Peripherals and Musical Instruments: Creating unique gestural interfaces.
Usage Tips
Orientation: Ensure the side with the conductive inks is on the outside of the bend for proper operation.
Sensitivity Adjustment: An adjustable buffer circuit using a potentiometer can be used to tune the sensitivity range for specific applications.
Threshold Switching: For simple "on/off" detection, the sensor can be used with an op-amp as a variable deflection threshold switch, allowing it to act as a switch without a microcontroller.
