DSO Shell has a similar bandwitch as DSO138, though it contains significant improvements in structure, mechanicals, and operation.

Display and MCU are now mounted on the same board (mainboard) to avoid using inter-board pin headers. Feedback from DSO138 users has shown that soldering on the pinheaders is often problematic for many beginners. The analog channel is placed on a separate board, which contains most user-installed parts. This brings better separation between analog and digital circuits. Without the analog portion, the mainboard is actually a general-purpose control board that can be used in many other applications. The mainboard is fully installed (except for a few through-hold components) and factory tested before packing.

The DSO Shell comes with a full enclosure. The front panel and top and bottom brackets are flexible for easy user modification.

A rotary encoder has been added. It makes parameter adjustments much quicker and easier.

The sensitivity of DSO Shell has been extended in both directions and is higher and wider than that of DSO 138. It reaches 5 mV/div—20 mV/div, while DSO138 is only 10 mV/div—5 mV/div.

DSO Shell runs on a 9V (do not use a power voltage higher than 10V!) power supply. Users need to prepare their own power supply since it is not included in the kits. The power jack on the mainboard accepts a standard 5.5mm or 2.1mm DC plug. An alternative 2-pin connector (0.1" pitch) is also provided for convenience when connecting to different power sources.
