Product Details

The Plastic 12x12 inch Density Clear Acrylic 2mm is a precision-manufactured polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA / Plexiglass) rigid clear sheet engineered for high-precision laser cutting, CNC routing, electronic display windows, equipment safety guards, and architectural scale prototyping. Measuring a convenient 12 × 12 inches (approx. 305 mm × 305 mm / 1 sq. ft. profile) with a nominal 2.0 mm thickness, it combines exceptional dimensional stability, high tensile strength, and impact resistance with superior optical clarity, offering up to 92% visible light transmission while weighing less than half of equivalent mineral glass. Perfectly flat and distortion-free, it provides an ideal transparent fabrication medium for maker workshops, custom robotic chassis, front-panel display covers, and precision laboratory fixtures.

Features

  • High-Definition Optical Clarity: Provides crystal-clear 92% light transmission with exceptional luminous efficiency and zero optical distortion, making internal electronics, displays, and indicators clearly visible.
  • Flame-Polished Laser Edges: Melts cleanly under focused CO2 laser beams to produce ultra-smooth, glass-like edge borders straight from the cutting bed without requiring hand sanding or flame-buffing.
  • Impact-Resistant & Lightweight: Provides up to 10 times the shatter resistance of traditional glass, preventing brittle fragmentation while reducing assembly weight for mobile robotics and portable test gear.
  • Thermoforming Pliability: Can be heated locally between 140°C and 160°C along a strip heater or with a heat gun to create crisp, permanent 90° bends for custom desktop bezels, angled meter housings, and display stands.
  • Dual-Sided Scratch Protection: Supplied with heavy-duty peel-off film or kraft paper on both sides to prevent workbench abrasions, scuffs, dust, and fingerprints during layout marking and machining.

Common Applications

  • Electronic Instrument Enclosures: Transparent top panels, inspection windows, and full chassis shells for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, audio amplifiers, and custom bench power supplies.
  • Display Faceplates & Bezels: Scratch-resistant protective covers for LCD, OLED, TFT screens, and 7-segment digital displays on industrial and DIY control consoles.
  • Robotics Chassis Plates: Rigid, lightweight baseplates and multi-tier decks for educational mobile robots, maintaining visibility of internal gearing, sensors, and wiring.
  • Protective Equipment Guards: Compact safety barriers, transparent dust covers, and splash guards for desktop 3D printers, CNC engravers, and benchtop equipment.
  • Scale Models & Architectural Exhibits: Precision laser-cut transparent glazing for architectural models, display cases, product display risers, and structural diorama components.

Usage Tips

  • Protective Masking Protocol (CRITICAL):
    • Do not remove the protective kraft paper or PE film prior to laser cutting, CNC routing, or drilling.
    • Keeping the mask on prevents vaporized acrylic condensates, exhaust smoke, and machine bed scratches from clouding the optically clear surface. Strip the mask only after all cutting, edge deburring, and drilling steps are completed.
  • CO2 Laser Cutting Parameters:
    • For a standard 40W to 60W CO2 laser tube, cut at moderate travel speeds with continuous air assist (10 to 15 psi). Air assist extinguishes flare-ups and clears vaporized gases from the kerf, ensuring clean, melted-glass edges.
    • When raster engraving, engrave the mirrored artwork onto the reverse side of the panel to leave a smooth, easily wipeable front surface.
  • Drilling Recommendations: Use specialized plastic drill bits (with a 60° to 90° tip and zero-to-negative rake) or lightly dull the cutting lips of standard twist drills to prevent the bit from pulling through too fast. Always back up the sheet firmly against a scrap piece of solid wood or MDF to prevent breakout chipping on the bottom face.
  • Solvent Cementing Protocol: Standard cyanoacrylate (superglue) off-gasses during curing, causing unsightly milky white blooming and fogging on transparent surfaces. Use water-thin acrylic solvent cement (methylene chloride base) with a precision needle applicator; capillary action draws the solvent into the seam to create an optically clear, chemically welded joint.
  • Cleaning & Maintenance Precautions: Never clean acrylic with rubbing alcohol, acetone, lacquer thinner, or ammonia-based glass sprays. These chemical solvents attack the polymer chains, causing immediate micro-crazing, stress fractures, and surface hazing. Clean exclusively with lukewarm water, mild liquid dish soap, and a soft microfiber towel.
