Product Details

The Ublox NEO-6M GPS Module is a high-performance, standalone satellite positioning breakout board built around the u-blox 6 positioning engine. Equipped with an onboard EEPROM, backup battery, and a dedicated external antenna port with an SMA/IPEX connector interface, this module delivers fast acquisition times, stable tracking sensitivity, and standard NMEA-0183 output. It is widely used in RC drones, vehicle navigation systems, robotics, and remote GPS telemetry trackers.

Interface and Pinout Guide

  • VCC: 3.3V to 5V DC Power Input
  • GND: Common Ground Reference
  • TX (TXD): Serial Data Output (Sends standard NMEA sentences to microcontroller RX, 3.3V TTL)
  • RX (RXD): Serial Data Input (Receives UBX/NMEA configuration commands from microcontroller TX)
  • PPS (Pulse Per Second): 1 Hz precision time pulse output (Flashes once a valid 3D GPS satellite fix is established)

Key Features

  • 50-Channel High Sensitivity Tracking: Captures and maintains satellite locks in challenging environments and dense urban areas.
  • Onboard EEPROM: Allows users to customize update rates, baud rates, and NMEA sentence outputs via u-center software, storing preferences permanently across power cycles.
  • Rechargeable Backup Battery: Retains ephemeris and almanac data during brief power interruptions, reducing fix acquisition to as low as 1 second (Hot Start).
  • Flexible Antenna Port: Supports direct screw-on SMA antennas or compact IPEX ceramic patch antennas for optimal satellite reception.
  • Wide Software Ecosystem: Compatible with popular parsing libraries like TinyGPS, TinyGPS++, and standard u-center evaluation tools.

Common Applications

  • Drones and Flight Controllers: Providing precise positioning, return-to-home (RTH), and waypoint navigation for quadcopters and fixed-wing RC aircraft.
  • Vehicle & Asset Tracking: Real-time fleet monitoring and anti-theft tracking paired with GSM/4G cellular modems.
  • Precision Time Synchronization: Utilizing the 1PPS output line for high-accuracy NTP time servers and data logging nodes.
  • Agricultural & Field Robotics: Guiding autonomous rovers, automated mowers, and mobile environmental sensing rigs.

Usage Tips

  • Clear Sky Requirement: GPS satellite signals operate in the microwave radio band and cannot penetrate reinforced concrete walls or thick metallic roofs. Always test the module near an open window or outdoors under a clear view of the sky to achieve a fix.
  • Fix Status Indicator: The onboard red LED (PPS indicator) will remain solid or unlit while searching for satellites. Once 3 or more satellites are locked and a valid 3D fix is established, the LED will begin flashing steadily at a 1-second pulse rate.
  • Logic Level Compatibility: While the module's VCC accepts 5V power, the serial RX pin operates at 3.3V TTL logic. When connecting to 5V microcontrollers (like an Arduino Uno), use a simple resistor voltage divider or logic level shifter on the MCU TX to module RX line to avoid damaging the NEO-6M input buffer.
