- Accounting for DC Voltage Drop over Distance: Because 12V DC travels over thin 24 AWG Cat5e/Cat6 copper conductors, voltage drop naturally occurs over distance:
- For short runs (up to 30m / 100ft), a standard 12V DC (1A–2A) power adapter at the DVR side provides adequate voltage at the camera.
- For longer runs (30m to 70m), power the system using a 13.5V to 15V adjustable DC power supply at the source or use a 24V AC/DC supply paired with a step-down buck converter at the camera end so that the camera receives at least 11.5V when heavy night-vision infrared (IR) LEDs activate.
- Use 100% Solid Bare Copper UTP Cable: Always use genuine Solid Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) Cat5e or Cat6 cable. Avoid Copper-Clad Aluminum (CCA) cables, as their higher electrical resistance causes severe DC voltage drop and premature video degradation.
